Description
This easy cheese dip is rich, smooth, and packed with cheesy flavor—perfect for dipping soft pretzels, tortilla chips, or veggies. Made with simple ingredients on the stovetop, it comes together in just 10 minutes and tastes way better than store-bought!
Ingredients
-
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
-
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-
1 cup whole milk (warm)
-
1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
-
1/2 teaspoon salt
-
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
-
1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional, for a little kick)
-
Optional: 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard or a splash of hot sauce for extra flavor
Instructions
-
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
-
Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, to make a roux.
-
Slowly pour in the warm milk while whisking to avoid lumps.
-
Cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring often, until the sauce thickens.
-
Reduce heat to low and stir in the shredded cheese a little at a time until melted and smooth.
-
Season with salt, garlic powder, paprika, and any optional extras.
-
Serve warm with soft pretzels, and enjoy!
Notes
-
Use freshly shredded cheese for the smoothest texture (pre-shredded can be grainy).
-
Keep warm in a slow cooker or fondue pot for parties.
-
To reheat, warm slowly on the stove or in the microwave, stirring often.
