Description

Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast, also known as SOS, is a classic comfort food dish made with dried beef in a creamy white sauce served over toasted bread. It’s rich, savory, and incredibly satisfying.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 jar (2.5 oz) dried beef, chopped
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 4 slices of bread, toasted

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux, stirring constantly.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, continuing to stir until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the chopped dried beef and black pepper (and cayenne, if using). Stir and simmer for another 2–3 minutes until heated through.
  5. Serve the creamed beef hot over slices of toast.

Notes

  • Rinse dried beef briefly to reduce saltiness if desired.
  • Serve over biscuits or mashed potatoes for variation.
  • Add sautéed onions or mushrooms for extra flavor.
