Ingredients
Scale
Pie Crust
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
Custard Filling
- 3 large eggs
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 ½ cups whole milk, warmed slightly
- â…› teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the custard pie.
- Prepare Pie Crust: Place the unbaked 9-inch pie crust into a pie dish and crimp the edges as desired for a decorative finish.
- Mix Custard Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, salt, and vanilla extract until the mixture is well combined and smooth.
- Add Milk Gradually: Slowly whisk the warm whole milk into the egg mixture to combine without cooking the eggs prematurely.
- Pour Into Crust: Pour the custard mixture evenly into the prepared pie crust, making sure it is well distributed.
- Sprinkle Nutmeg: Lightly sprinkle ground nutmeg over the top of the custard if using, to add a subtle aromatic flavor.
- Bake the Pie: Place the pie carefully on the center oven rack and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. The pie is done when the center is just set and a knife inserted near the middle comes out clean.
- Cool the Pie: Remove from the oven and let the pie cool to room temperature for about 1 hour.
- Chill Before Serving: Refrigerate the pie for at least 2 hours to allow it to fully set and develop flavor before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For extra richness, substitute ½ cup of the whole milk with heavy cream.
- Serve the pie with fresh berries or a dollop of whipped cream for an enhanced presentation and flavor.
