Description

This classic Crust Custard Pie features a smooth and creamy baked custard filling nestled inside a flaky 9-inch pie crust. Perfectly sweetened and lightly spiced with nutmeg, it’s an old-fashioned American dessert that’s simple to prepare and absolutely delicious. The rich custard is made from eggs, sugar, vanilla, and milk, then baked to a delicate set, making it ideal for any occasion or a comforting treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Crust

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

Custard Filling

  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups whole milk, warmed slightly
  • â…› teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the custard pie.
  2. Prepare Pie Crust: Place the unbaked 9-inch pie crust into a pie dish and crimp the edges as desired for a decorative finish.
  3. Mix Custard Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, salt, and vanilla extract until the mixture is well combined and smooth.
  4. Add Milk Gradually: Slowly whisk the warm whole milk into the egg mixture to combine without cooking the eggs prematurely.
  5. Pour Into Crust: Pour the custard mixture evenly into the prepared pie crust, making sure it is well distributed.
  6. Sprinkle Nutmeg: Lightly sprinkle ground nutmeg over the top of the custard if using, to add a subtle aromatic flavor.
  7. Bake the Pie: Place the pie carefully on the center oven rack and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. The pie is done when the center is just set and a knife inserted near the middle comes out clean.
  8. Cool the Pie: Remove from the oven and let the pie cool to room temperature for about 1 hour.
  9. Chill Before Serving: Refrigerate the pie for at least 2 hours to allow it to fully set and develop flavor before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For extra richness, substitute ½ cup of the whole milk with heavy cream.
  • Serve the pie with fresh berries or a dollop of whipped cream for an enhanced presentation and flavor.
