Ingredients
Scale
For the cream cheese spread:
- ½ cup cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup shredded Double Gloucester or cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
For the garlic butter spread:
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1½ teaspoons minced garlic
- ½ teaspoon salt
For the sandwich:
- 8 slices artisan bread (such as sourdough or country white)
- 8 slices cheddar cheese
- 8 slices provolone cheese
Instructions
- Prepare cream cheese spread: In a medium bowl, mix together the softened cream cheese, shredded Double Gloucester or cheddar cheese, heavy cream, and garlic powder until you achieve a smooth and creamy consistency.
- Make garlic butter spread: In a separate bowl, combine the mayonnaise, minced garlic, and salt thoroughly to create the garlic butter spread that will coat the outside of the bread for an extra rich flavor and crispy texture.
- Assemble sandwiches: Lay out 8 slices of artisan bread. On 4 slices, spread the cream cheese mixture evenly on one side. Then, layer 2 slices of cheddar cheese and 2 slices of provolone cheese on top of each spread slice. Close each sandwich by placing the remaining 4 slices of bread on top.
- Apply garlic butter spread: Generously spread the garlic butter mixture on the outside surfaces of each slice of bread to prepare for grilling and to develop a golden, crispy crust.
- Grill sandwiches: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sandwiches on the skillet and grill for 2 to 3 minutes per side. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even grilling. Adjust the heat as necessary to prevent burning; continue until the bread is golden brown and the cheese inside is completely melted.
- Serve: Once grilled, serve the sandwiches warm and gooey. Pair with tomato soup or your favorite dipping sauce for an irresistible meal.
Notes
- Use thick-cut artisan bread for best flavor and texture.
- Substitute Double Gloucester cheese with Monterey Jack or mozzarella for different flavor profiles and meltiness.
- Adjust garlic amounts based on personal preference to avoid overpowering the sandwich.
- Control heat carefully while grilling to ensure cheese melts fully without burning the bread.
