Description

This irresistible Green Bean Casserole with Tater Tots is a comforting American side dish perfect for holidays and family dinners. It combines classic creamy green bean casserole flavors with a crispy tater tot topping for added texture and fun. The casserole is easy to prepare, bakes to golden perfection, and can be made ahead, making it a convenient and crowd-pleasing addition to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Casserole Base

  • 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups cooked or canned green beans, drained
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1/2 cup French fried onions (plus extra for topping)

Topping

  • 3 cups frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Base Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir until smooth and well blended.
  3. Add Green Beans and Cheese: Fold in the drained green beans, shredded cheddar cheese if using, and 1/2 cup of French fried onions into the soup mixture. Mix gently to combine evenly.
  4. Assemble Casserole: Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the top of the casserole base.
  5. Bake: Place the casserole in the oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy on top.
  6. Add Onion Topping: Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining French fried onions evenly over the top. Return it to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, until the onions are lightly browned and crisp.
  7. Cool and Serve: Allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving to set and make portioning easier.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add chopped cooked bacon or sautéed mushrooms to the casserole mixture.
  • Use fresh blanched green beans instead of canned or cooked for a fresher taste and firmer texture.
  • This casserole can be assembled a day ahead and refrigerated. Bake just before serving to save time on the day of your meal.
