- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8 slices sandwich bread
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar or American cheese
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until beef is browned and onion is soft. Drain excess fat.
- Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat.
- Butter one side of each bread slice. Place half the slices butter-side down on a skillet or griddle.
- Top each with cheese, a scoop of sloppy joe mixture, more cheese, and another slice of bread, butter-side up.
- Cook over medium heat until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted, about 2–3 minutes per side.
- Cut in half and serve warm.
Notes
- Use Texas toast for a thicker, crispier sandwich.
- Add pickles or jalapeños for extra flavor.
- Keep warm in a 200°F oven if making multiple batches.
