Description

These Oven Baked Meatball Sandwiches are the ultimate comfort food! Tender, juicy meatballs smothered in marinara sauce, topped with melty cheese, and baked until golden. Served on a soft hoagie roll, these sandwiches are a crowd-pleaser, perfect for a cozy dinner or game day.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-style)

  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (or 2 tablespoons dried parsley)

  • 1 egg

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1 teaspoon dried basil

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)

For the Sandwiches:

  • 4 hoagie rolls (or sub rolls)

  • 2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)

  • Fresh basil or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, parsley, egg, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined (avoid overmixing).

    • Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1 ½ inches in diameter, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

    • Drizzle olive oil over the meatballs and bake for 18–20 minutes, or until they are cooked through and golden brown.

  1. Assemble the Sandwiches:

    • While the meatballs are baking, slice the hoagie rolls open and place them on a baking sheet. You can toast the rolls for extra crunch by placing them in the oven for 3–5 minutes.

    • Once the meatballs are done, transfer them to a large pot and pour the marinara sauce over them. Let them simmer in the sauce for 5 minutes to soak up the flavor.

  2. Bake the Sandwiches:

    • Spoon 3–4 meatballs onto each hoagie roll and top with a generous amount of marinara sauce.

    • Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan on top of the meatballs.

    • Return the assembled sandwiches to the oven and bake for 5–7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  3. Serve:

    • Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.

    • Serve the sandwiches warm, with extra marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • If you prefer, you can also make the meatballs ahead of time and freeze them for later use.

  • For a spicier kick, add some red pepper flakes to the marinara sauce.

  • Swap out the mozzarella for provolone or even a combination of cheeses for extra flavor.
