Ingredients
-
1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
-
1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-style)
-
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
-
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (or 2 tablespoons dried parsley)
-
1 egg
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 teaspoon dried oregano
-
1 teaspoon dried basil
-
Salt and pepper, to taste
-
1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
For the Sandwiches:
-
4 hoagie rolls (or sub rolls)
-
2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)
-
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
-
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)
-
Fresh basil or parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
-
-
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
-
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, parsley, egg, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined (avoid overmixing).
-
Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1 ½ inches in diameter, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
-
Drizzle olive oil over the meatballs and bake for 18–20 minutes, or until they are cooked through and golden brown.
-
-
Assemble the Sandwiches:
-
While the meatballs are baking, slice the hoagie rolls open and place them on a baking sheet. You can toast the rolls for extra crunch by placing them in the oven for 3–5 minutes.
-
Once the meatballs are done, transfer them to a large pot and pour the marinara sauce over them. Let them simmer in the sauce for 5 minutes to soak up the flavor.
-
-
Bake the Sandwiches:
-
Spoon 3–4 meatballs onto each hoagie roll and top with a generous amount of marinara sauce.
-
Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan on top of the meatballs.
-
Return the assembled sandwiches to the oven and bake for 5–7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
-
-
Serve:
-
Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
-
Serve the sandwiches warm, with extra marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
-
Notes
-
If you prefer, you can also make the meatballs ahead of time and freeze them for later use.
-
For a spicier kick, add some red pepper flakes to the marinara sauce.
-
Swap out the mozzarella for provolone or even a combination of cheeses for extra flavor.
