Description

These Swedish Meatballs are a classic comfort food dish with juicy, flavorful meatballs smothered in a rich and creamy sauce. Perfect for a cozy family dinner or as a party appetizer.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the sauce:

  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meatballs: In a bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, onion, egg, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Form the mixture into small meatballs: Roll the meat mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
  3. Cook the meatballs: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the meatballs on all sides until cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Make the sauce: In the same skillet, melt butter, sprinkle flour, and whisk until golden. Slowly whisk in beef broth, then add heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Simmer: Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens and the meatballs are fully cooked.
  6. Serve: Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes or with lingonberry sauce.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a dash of allspice to the meat mixture.
  • Feel free to adjust the seasoning in the sauce to suit your taste preferences.
  • These meatballs freeze well, making them a great make-ahead meal option.
