- 2 cups water or vegetable broth
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1 bay leaf (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
- In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat.
- Add the turmeric, cumin (if using), black pepper, and salt to the pan, stirring for about 1 minute to toast the spices.
- Add the rice to the saucepan, stirring to coat the rice in the spices.
- Pour in the water or vegetable broth and add the bay leaf (if using).
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
- Remove the pan from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and discard the bay leaf before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute vegetable broth for water to add more flavor to the rice.
- Feel free to adjust the amount of turmeric according to your preference for color and flavor.
